ASD’s IB Biology Students Explore Sustainable Farming at Fresco Hydroponics Farm

At American School Dhahran, 23  junior IB Biology students took part in an enriching field trip to Fresco Hydroponics Farm as part of their exploration of sustainable agricultural practices. The experience offered students a hands-on opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications in plant science and environmental sustainability.

Hydroponics — an innovative method of cultivating plants without soil — was at the center of the visit. The system delivers essential minerals directly to the roots through nutrient-rich water solutions. Plants are either suspended in water or supported by inert media such as clay pebbles, coconut coir or perlite. This soil-less growing technique allows for efficient water use, minimal environmental impact and year-round crop production.

The field trip was generously sponsored by Mr. Basim Essa Almislim, founder of Fresco Hydroponics, who personally guided the tour. Mr. Almislim shared his extensive knowledge and experience with students, describing how the farm began as a research-driven initiative and has grown through collaboration with scientists around the world.

Throughout the visit, students observed firsthand how environmental variables — including light, temperature, pH and nutrient composition — influence plant growth. They also saw how hydroponic systems serve as a sustainable alternative to traditional farming methods. These observations deepened their understanding of key IB Biology concepts such as photosynthesis, plant transport systems and nutrient cycling.

The experience highlighted the core values of IB education: inquiry-based learning, global thinking and real-world engagement. By linking theoretical knowledge to tangible applications in agricultural technology and sustainability, the field trip supported critical thinking and inspired students to consider how science can be used to address complex global challenges.
