ISG Students Compete in Saudi Arabia National Debate (SAND) Tournament

The Saudi Arabian Interprovince Debates (SAID) 2025, formerly known as the Saudi Arabia National Debate (SAND), culminated April 12 with ISG 2 and ISG 3 as finalists after four preliminary rounds and semifinals.

Eight teams participated in the parliamentary-style round robin debates on current global issues. Semifinalists also included ISG 1 and Saudi Debaters 1.

SAID, which began in 2024 under the American School Dhahran (ASD) Debate Club, saw 16 teams compete in seven rounds last year. ASD Team 1, were the inaugural winners. Ms. Shaila Koya sponsored the debate contest, and toastmasters served as judges.

The former SAND competition, first introduced in 2018 by the ASD Debate Club, has consistently provided a platform for student voice, critical thinking and public speaking. This year’s tournament featured eight teams from the International Schools Group (ISG), including students from American School Dhahran, British School Dhahran, ISG Dammam and Saudi Debaters.

Students engaged in debates on topics such as support for open borders for refugees, the use of artificial intelligence in criminal justice systems, a global transition to alternative energy sources by 2050, and the environmental impact of blockchain technology.

Organizers said the debates demonstrated students' research, argumentation skills and understanding of complex global challenges. They emphasized the importance of such events in fostering communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills.

ASD is proud to support opportunities like SAID that allow students to engage in civic discourse, practice respectful dialogue and develop confidence in their ability to shape the future.
