Elementary students, alongside Mr. Graham Laing, Mrs. Komali Abbineni and Mrs. Jayshree Padaychee, recently participated in an exciting Poetry World Cup, where they further developed their poetry analysis and writing skills. Throughout the competition, they explored poems by renowned poets such as Maya Angelou, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Shel Silverstein and contemporary voices like Rhiannon McGavin.
As they engaged with these works, the students refined their ability to analyze word choice and meaning, exploring how each poem affected the head, hands and heart of its readers.
Afterward, the students decided to create their own version of the competition, featuring poems they had written. Using the techniques they’d learned, they carefully chose words to add depth and meaning to their pieces. They also applied their analytical skills to thoughtfully review each other’s work, selecting poems to move forward in the competition.
In the end, every student displayed integrity and a growing understanding of poetry. The final poems reflected their hard work and newfound appreciation for the art form, enhancing their literary skills and cultivating a deeper connection with poetry as both writers and readers.
