On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, elementary students in ISG Jubail were delighted to welcome Ms. Nawal Alfahad, a knowledgeable, experienced and passionate speaker on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Ms. Alfahad’s passion lies in current and future development happening in Saudi Arabia, and particularly in the implementation of the UN SDGs in the kingdom and around the world. She spoke to our students about the specific goals the kingdom is targeting: climate change and affordable and clean energy for all.

As part of their social studies, reading and writing curriculum, elementary students at ISG Jubail are learning about the SDGs. In groups, students have selected goals they are curious about and are conducting research on the goals zero hunger, quality education, no poverty, gender equality and climate change. Students had the opportunity to show Ms. Alfahad their research notes and ask her specific, thoughtful questions on their topics.

By researching topics they are interested in, students develop their reading, paraphrasing, note-taking and writing skills. Their learning allows them to better understand the SDGs and the related projects, and make connections on how these projects can impact schools, communities and ultimately the world.

Through their discussions with Ms. Alfahad, students also learned some valuable lessons on what they can do to help improve our world.  Education is key. It’s everyone’s responsibility to stay informed and continue having conversations about the issues that face our global communities and the solutions that are being developed.  There are also small, meaningful steps we can each take such as switching off lights that are not being used, being mindful of running water and developing accessible classrooms and communities.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 interconnected goals adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015. They aim to address the biggest challenges facing our planet and its people by 2030, including poverty, hunger, inequality, climate change and environmental degradation. These goals are a call to action for everyone, including individuals, governments and businesses, to work together toward a more sustainable and just future.

At ISG Jubail, we would like to thank Ms. Nawal Alfahad for her visit and the wealth of knowledge and experience she shared with our students.
