ASD Hosts Inspiring Book Fair Featuring Acclaimed Authors Ali Sparkes and Siobhan McDermott

American School Dhahran proudly hosted its annual book fair this week—an exciting celebration of reading, imagination and the power of storytelling. This year’s event was especially memorable, featuring visits from two distinguished authors: British writer Ali Sparkes and debut author Siobhan McDermott.

Sparkes, winner of the prestigious Blue Peter Book Award for Frozen in Time, has written more than 40 thrilling adventures for children and young adults. Her fast-paced, imaginative stories have captivated readers around the world. During the fair, she led engaging sessions for students from both ASD and British School Dhahran (BSD), sharing her creative process and inspiring students to explore storytelling with confidence and curiosity.

Also featured was Siobhan McDermott, an emerging voice in children’s literature whose debut novel, Paper Dragons, draws from a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. Born in Hong Kong and raised on Chinese legends and Irish folklore, McDermott now lives in the United Kingdom. Her storytelling is shaped by moments from her life, including childhood ferry rides between Lantau Island and Hong Kong, and travels across Taiwan, Italy and Spain. During her sessions, McDermott offered students a unique perspective on heritage, imagination and finding inspiration in everyday life.

Students had the opportunity to explore a diverse selection of books, connect with fellow young readers, and attend signing sessions with author Ali Sparks. These interactions allowed them to engage directly with authors and develop a deeper appreciation for storytelling and its power to connect cultures and ideas.

The event served as a vibrant celebration of literature and community, creating lasting memories and encouraging a lifelong love of reading among ASD and BSD students. American School Dhahran is honored to have hosted such an enriching and inspiring experience.
